The college was established in the year 1930. It stands as the 4th oldest Government College and is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. This college is located at Jogeshwari(E) in the western suburb of Mumbai. The lush green campus with a beautiful old college building, separate science, vocational course, and humanities buildings, as well as a sports complex, covers almost 54 acres of land. The scenic beauty and the antique architecture of the college administrative building housed with a spacious library in it, form a heritage structure.

The IY College, as it is popularly known as, provides education in arts, science and Commerce streams. Besides these, the college also offers self-finance courses, especially in subjects like Computer science and Biotechnology. There are various courses that are being taught at both UG & PG levels. B.Sc. program are offered in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology and Statistics and M.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Statistics. In commerce stream programs run by the college are B. Com and on self-finance basis M.Com, BAF and BMS. In the arts stream along with the conventional languages, the college has its own culture of preserving an Indian knowledge database by offering graduate-level courses in Urdu, Persian and Arabic. The college also runs Ph.D programs in all three streams.

A very strong, dedicated and capable team of educators has always been the driving force in the growth of the College.

The infrastructure facilities within the campus include modern health care instruments at Gymkhana, a shooting range field adjacent to the Sports Complex, NCC units for girls and boys, hostel facility for boys, modern instruments in the laboratory such as HPTLC, GCMS, Raman, TGDTA, DSC, AAS & XRD which provides facility for researchers, canteen and mess facility, indoor auditorium, outdoor open stage for annual social functions, jogging track, Miyavki Garden adds to the legacy of the college.

Further, well-equipped computer labs and advanced sophisticated instruments for UG, PG and research in the science stream enrich the institute with modern technology. These valuable infrastructural facilities make this college standout distinctly and attract more learners.

The interdisciplinary research in Science, Arts and Commerce propels research scholars to disseminate their results in the research forum, the students are also motivated and encouraged to actively engaged in research.

We enrich our curriculum through value-added and skill-based courses to upgrade communication and technological skills and also imbibe moral values amongst our students. This in turn streamlined with our vision & missionary statement.

The college also has YCMOU study center and caters to the needs of the students who can complete their graduation externally. Nearly 15 courses in Science, Commerce and Arts for example MSc (EVS) M.A. and M.Com (management and accountancy.) are offered in the YCMOU study centre located in our campus. College has signed MOUs with top-notch institutes for collaborative education.

The college organizes yearly, State, National and International conferences, workshops and seminars, along with hands-on training programs in collaboration with industry and corporate sectors.

Thus, the college provides a rich culture to our students for the all-round/overall development of their personalities, where students channel their potential in pursuit of excellence. Community services, leadership training, human values and best practices are conducted by departments to further strengthen and mold the learners to become distinguished and learned citizens of India.
