The
Department of Statistics of The Govt. of Maharashtra Ismail Yusuf College,
Jogeshwari (E), Mumbai is one among the prominent and leading departments of the
Faculty of Science of the college. It was established in 1981 and in the 43
years since its inception, it has grown from strength to strength.
The
subject Statistics, earlier perceived and taught as a branch of Mathematics
under the department of Mathematics in institutions of higher learning in
India, was given its due share of recognition, thanks to the efforts of P.C. Mahalonobis,
the great Indian statistician and economist, as an vast and advanced field of
study with wide applicability in almost all endeavors of human enquiry, therefore deserving to be
taught under separate and independent departments in the institutes of the country.
This was recognized under a National Education Policy, thereafter which Statistics
Departments came into existence, changing the educational landscape of the country for
future generations of students to come.
Currently,
the Department of Statistics of I Y College offers the Undergraduate and
Postgraduate program in Statistics as a Major
Subject, besides also teaching papers of Statistics in other faculties such as Commerce
and Computer Science.
The
Department is spread over a huge area having 2 Classrooms and a well equipped computer
laboratory, besides having cabins for the Head and teaching faculty. It also
has a departmental library having over a
100 text and reference books for ready access to students. In complete
accordance with the Vision and Mission of the department which is to pursue the
highest standards of personal growth, academic excellence and innovative
practices with clarity of vision, hard work, determination and dedication and
to embrace ethical and pure intent in all pursuits, the well qualified faculty
of the department is committed to these goals with zealous determination. The
Department also follows the principle of
imparting education with a holistic approach
and to this end, has healthy interactions with other academic and non academic departments
via conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. The department also organizes the
above activities as well as Study tours every year and encourages students to
have healthy participation in all of them.
The
Department alumni have shown exemplary
success in their future endeavors, be
it, getting admissions in various
prestigious higher learning institutions in India and abroad or landing good
placements with well paying jobs in corporate sectors.
